The so-called „first and second Viennese medical school" have become keywords with an impact reaching far beyond Austria’s borders. Are we currently experiencing a "third Vienna medical school"? As the long serving, former mayor of Vienna, Prof. Helmut Zilk recently suggested.
A suggestion than cannot be dismissed lightly, for I am convinced that in Austria, (and especially here in the capital, Vienna) we offer excellent medicine, that has regained it’s significance internationally. It makes me proud to know that so many foreign patients regularly make their way to us in order to seek medical treatment.
It is equally pleasing to know that delegations of Austrian doctors are welcome guests at medical conferences worldwide. National doctors not only share their know-how with their foreign colleagues through lectures, but also by conducting operations and treatments together. I have quite often personally visited medical universities all over the world and I am always delighted by the intense, productive exchange of opinions and experience.
But why do Austrian physicians enjoy such a good reputation? Is it only because of their capacities in the complete range of medical fields? I don’t think so, since this is also the case in other countries, most significantly the USA.
In fact I believe it is a combination of internationally renowned experts and excellent basic treatment that make up the charm of this cosmopolitan city of medical science. Along with the university clinics, Vienna has several university related hospitals, as well as private clinics, that treat national and foreign patients with highly advanced technology, excellent medical staff and the best possible comfort.
Due to its geo-political location, Vienna has always been a platform for migration and has proved that it can cope with this heritage, through the deliberately highlighted transfer of patients to Vienna. In order for them to tackle their health issues, we want our guests from abroad to benefit from the knowledge and competence of our native physicians as well as the excellent facilities in our health centres.
